SINGAPORE — The Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) now houses the second satellite dental clinic by the National University Centre for Oral Health, Singapore (NUCOHS), increasing accessibility to dental care for residents staying in the Western region.
The launch of the NUCOHS Dental Clinic @ NTFGH was officiated by Mdm Rahayu Mahzam, Minister of State, Ministry of Digital Development and Information & Ministry of Health, on 19 March 2025.
Equipped with 10 dental chairs, the clinic will have the capacity to treat over 80 patients daily. It provides a range of dental services, including gum disease management and tooth replacement procedures. The clinic began its new service model on 7 March 2025 and has received close to 200 referrals to date.
Polyclinics and Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS) clinics can refer patients to NUCOHS Dental Clinic @ NTFGH for more complex dental care, such as crowns/bridges, dentures and gum surgeries. Hospital patients requiring such services will also be served by the clinic.
“Working with NUCOHS allows us to streamline resources and provide patients with more specialised dental care and treatment in an accessible location close to the community. This also complements the range of medical and surgical services provided for our subsidised patients at the hospital,” Associate Professor Dan Yock Young, Chief Executive Officer, NTFGH and Jurong Community Hospital (JCH).
Dr Wendy Wang, Executive Director, NUCOHS, added, “Setting up a satellite dental clinic at NTFGH is part of our strategic plan to have multiple practicing sites to provide accessibility and cost-effective care for our patients. More importantly, it allows us to maintain a consistent level of quality patient care across the various clinics in the cluster. The establishment of these satellite clinics at NTFGH, and at Alexandra Hospital (AH), will enable NUCOHS to focus on advance specialist and complex oral health care, with an outlook of shorter wait time for patients seeking specialised treatment.
Dr Henry Ho, Head and Senior Consultant, Dentistry, NTFGH added, “Our clinic focuses on providing both intermediate and specialised dental care for our patients, which helps to ease the patient load at NUCOHS. Receiving care early, ranging from preventive care to restorative procedures, is critical to maintain function and prevent further damage. To date, we have treated more than 130 subsidised patients, and we are expecting the number of referrals to increase over time.”
Mr Yeo Chin Huat, a 68-year-old patient who was recently referred to NUCOHS Dental Clinic @ NTFGH said, "My current dentures have become loose over time, causing discomfort as food can get stuck easily and the dentures may come off at times. I am relieved to be given an earlier appointment at NUCOHS Dental Clinic @ NTFGH. The location is also convenient as it is just a few bus stops away from my home.”
The launch of NUCOHS Dental Clinic @ NTFGH supports the rising demand for oral healthcare services in Singapore as the population grows and with an ageing demographic due to increased life expectancy.
